Anthem Analyses

Prior to class each week in Units 1 and 2, students will engage with multimedia learning content (e.g., musical scene clips, core Black studies texts, theatre critic reviews, etc.) and conduct additional independent research on key themes to prepare for group discussion.

Students are required to submit preparatory reflections via the guided study pages linked below, which prompt them to consider methodological and thematic issues.

Anthem Analyses are meant to guide students’ preparation for class, and should be responded to in that light. Points are not given for being “right” about a topic, but rather for engaging meaningfully with learning materials. Grading will be based on the completeness, thoughtfulness, and timeliness of submissions. Each week’s response will be worth 3% of the final grade.

Completeness (1 point per analysis)
- - all questions should be answered
  - recognising that some themes might be new and/or that some weeks are fuller than others: students may make notes within their homework submissions that they want to return to a question or issue after the class discussion, but should then edit their responses shortly after class (note that a question will never necessitate this, as all questions are meant to reflect on the preparatory materials, not class discussions – but this is an option for topics that students may feel confused or uncertain about)
Thoughtfulness (1 point per analysis)
- - responses should make it clear that the student has engaged with the preparatory materials (for instance, by including notes about specific things from the reading)
  - while there are no explicit word counts, most of the questions will require a few sentences in order to address them meaningfully
Timeliness (1 point per analysis)
- - the homework should be submitted by midnight on Monday before class each week
  - late submissions will lose 0.5 points per day
